Smallville has cast its Supergirl. For some time it was thought that the announcement of who would be playing Kara, Clark's teenage cousin from Krypton, would be made at the San Diego Comic Con. The rumor mill, however, would have none of that. TvGuide has revealed the identity behind
Smallville's Supergirl / Kara as Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort. Perhaps best known as the sister of
Instant Star lead Jude Harrison (Alexz Johnson), Vandervoort now has the unenviable task of connecting with
Smallville's passionately vocal fanbase.

So far, in contrast to
Supernatural's fan base,
Smallville fans have not bristled at the inclusion of the Kara character. That could have something to do with the fact that Kara / Supergirl is a legitimate part of the Superman mythology, depending on which fork you travel. None the less, one look at Vandervoort and there can be little doubt that
Smallville's producers are looking to add some heat to the production.
Kara will provide an important link to Clark's Kryptonian roots. Since she was put in suspended animation at an older age than the man of steel, she is in a position to reminiscence of their home world in real time.
On the other hand, Clark's indoctrination to the way of life on earth will become crucial to Kara's integration in our society. Clark will have his hands full getting Kara on the same page with Earth's teenagers.
The rumor mill is saying that Kara will be put into a romantic position with Aaron Ashmore's Jimmy Olson early on in the next season, and will also be tempted by the increasingly evil Lex Luthor.
Being a fellow Kryptonian, Kara will acquire all of Clark's powers, plus one he has yet to master. She can fly! Of course the argument over whether or not Clark has flown yet is a fiery one amongst
Smallville fans, Kara will have the ability down pat. Will she teach Clark?
