Lana Lang Kristin Laura Kreuk was born on December 30, 1982 in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is part-Dutch, part-Chinese, part-Indonesian and part-Jamaican. Her parents are landscape architects, and she has one younger sister. Kristin had to stop training in gymnastics when she was in 11th grade due to her scoliosis. She was a student at Eric Hamber Secondary School and was supposed to attend Simon Frasier University (where she planned to major in either psychology, environmental science or forensic science) when a CBS casting director suddenly contacted her school. They were looking for an exotic-looking teenager who could to try out for the part of Laurel Yeung (for the television series Edgemont), and Kreuk’s drama teacher persuaded her to audition.
Prior to her appearance in Edgemont, Kreuk had no previous acting experience except for her participation in a number of her school’s musicals. Kreuk eventually found proper representation and after filming the first season of the show, she was cast in the made-for-tv movie Snow White: Fairest of Them All, where she starred opposite Miranda Richardson. Thereafter, her agent sent a tape of Kreuk to Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, two screenwriters who, at the time, were in the midst of casting for the WB series, Smallville. Kreuk was then asked to audition for the role of Lana Lang, but she expressed hesitation, worried that the character might follow the stereotype of the shallow, dim-witted cheerleader. However, upon reading the script, she changed her mind, and immediately took the role when it was offered to her.
Her additional acting credits include the miniseries Legend of the Earthsea, the comedy Eurotrip and the independent film Partition. She has also served as spokesmodel for a Neutrogena worldwide ad campaign. Before she pursued a career in acting, Kreuk was deeply interested in forensic science. “I wanted to be a forensic scientist for a long time,” she said. “It's like putting the pieces of a puzzle together. Solving mysteries seemed like it would be fun, scary and exciting all at the same time.”
