Alaina Huffman, who was recently known as Maureen Bowers on Painkiller Jane, is set to appear on yet another science fiction series.  According to TV Guide, the 25-year-old Canadian actress is expected to grace Smallville as the Black Canary on January 10, 2008 in the episode entitled “Siren.”

Warning: May contain spoilers.

smallvilleIn the 11th episode of season 7, fans can finally see the Black Canary, the DC Comics super heroine noted for her martial arts kills and her high powered sonic scream that has the ability to shatter objects and incapacitate villains. Aside from playing the Black Canary, Huffman will also be playing her character’s alter ego, Dinah, who works as a host of a conservative radio talk program.

Just like her comic book counterpart, Huffman has dark hair, but wears a wig while in action as the Black Canary.  Smallville’s version of the Black Canary will also have her trademark superpowers and sport the traditional fishnet stockings.

“When we meet her, she’s a vigilante working for Lex Luthor,” Smallville creator Al Gough revealed to TV Guide.  “[The Justice League] has been keeping their eyes on Lex and trying to thwart him at every turn.  [Lex] will say to Black Canary, if you can bring me the head of the Green Arrow, I’ll make it very much worth your while.”

Aside from the Black Canary, “Siren” will also mark the return of the Green Arrow/Oliver Queen, played by Justin Hartley, who was last seen in January heading off with his newly formed Justice League.

While the Black Canary and the Green Arrow will be pit against each other initially, the relationship of the two will soon evolve.  After all, the two crime fighters have a long and complicated romantic history as seen in the DC Comics lore.

“It’s the very beginning of their relationship,” Gough said.  “At the end of the episode you clearly see that they have some sparks.”
