There's one pilot being developed for the CW that's getting a lot of attention, and it's not the
Sex and the City prequel
The Carrie Diaries. Instead it's
Arrow,
the reimagining of Green Arrow that has people buzzing, and now we have
our first look at what this new incarnation of the classic superhero
will look like.
The show, written and produced by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (
Brothers and Sisters,
Green Lantern) stars
Hung's Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, a rich playboy who is stranded on an island for five years before returning to fight crime with the help of a bow and arrow and a green leather suit.
Comparisons to
Smallville's Green Arrow are inevitable (especially since David Nutter, who directed the
Smallville pilot, is also directed the
Arrow pilot), but this photo makes it clear that the tone of both projects is completely different. While
Smallville was shiny and glossy, like a classic comic book, Arrow is more of a graphic novel, a darker and moodier show.
Still, the new costume looks an awful lot like the Green Arrow's costume on
Smallville, only with sleeves and less Technicolor. Here's a side-by-side comparison.
Arrow also stars Susanna Thompson as Oliver Queen's mother,
The River's Paul Blackthorne as a police detective and Katie Cassidy as the detective's daughter (and Oliver's love interest).
Arrow is one of eight pilots being developed by the CW for next season.
