smallville clark and chloe Smallville 'Promise' has the makings of an extravaganza for fans of the show.  It is, pretty much, what a great portion of this season has been leading to;  the marriage of Lana and Lex, and whether or not Clark is going to let it go down as planned.  With all the stress and suspicion that has evolved on recent episodes of Smallville,  it may be as likely at this point that Lana herself would throw in the towel on the marriage,  save for a little contingency that will surely shock and surprise many Smallville fans.  Read on and beware the spoilers.

Our friends at KryptonSite uncovered a couple of photo captions at The CW's press site that explains a lot about what is going to go down at Lana and Lex's wedding, as well as exposing a few wrinkles that might impact how Lana chooses.

  • The events leading up to the wedding are seen from three different points of view - those of Clark, Lana, and Lex.
  • Lionel reveals to Lana that he knows Clark's secret and says that he will kill Clark if Lana doesn't marry Lex.
So the big question is out of the bag: does Lana have it all figured out, and if so how will that influence her decision.  What I like about this is it changes the entire dynamic going forward, which is good.  I've been no fan of the Lana/Lex ambiguity and Lana's constant snooping to figure out Clark's secret.  It is just dead weight in the story at this late hour.  Now it's in the open, Smallville can work new plots centered around her knowing instead of tip-toeing around her brushes with the truth.

Does Lionel's threat carry weight?  Is he sincere?  If we think about it, he might be onto something here... something that will push Lana and Lex together.  On the other hand, this is an excellent opportunity for Clark to do something drastic and set the stage for Lex's departure next season.  Nothing would finish building that rift between Lex and Clark like the boy in flannel screwing up Lex's wedding.

The three points of view thing ups the ante for the episode as well.  This is a device no one could have expected and it promises some very unique insight into where these characters are coming from and how they will collide in the end.  Tune in tomorrow to find out how it all goes down in Smallville 'Promise'.
