In an effort to appease Smallville fans and convince them that the CW series’ move to Friday nights won’t be lethal to the show, CW head honcho Dawn Ostroff says she has faith in the show’s “very strong fan base,” and with the help of promos to air during the new Thursday tandem of Vampire Diaries and Supernatural, Clark Kent will be OK.

“I think Smallville will do better [than 2 mil],” she says, adding that it would be “super” if her flagship show will perform better than Everybody Hates Chris and The Game.

In other related developments, Ostroff reveals that despite the split, neither Smallville or Supernatural are entering their final seasons this coming fall.  The CW entertainment president said a definite “no” when asked if Clark Kent will be hanging up his red cape after its ninth season. “It’s not necessarily the last season…. “I hope it’s not.”

For his part, Supernatural showrunner Eric Kripke has maintained in recent years that the Winchester brothers’ series is operating on a five-year plan, which means the upcoming season would be the last.  Ostroff, however, begged to differ and opted to take the “we will see how this season goes” stance.

“[The Supernatural creative team] did a really good job this year,” Ostroff noted, “and it really paid off in the ratings.”

New series The Vampire Diaries will lead into Supernatural on Thursdays.  The upcoming drama based on a series of books of the same name revolves around Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a tragic young heroine who is the object of passion for two vampire brothers — one good, one evil — who are at war for her soul and for the souls of her friends and family.
