You can tell it's somewhat a slow news day. Just somewhat. Alaina Huffman appeared in
Smallville for, what, a couple of episodes in the past season? Yep, Black Canary, remember? Just thought you'd want to know that she's jumping sci-fi ships, as she's taken a regular role in an extension of the
Stargate franchise,
Stargate Universe.
The significant thing for her is, the character she plays here--medic 1st Lt Tamara Johansen--is different from all the other characters she's played in the past. "I typically play really confident, kind of ass-kicking characters," she said in a video profile prepped for the show. "It is nice to have that inner struggle."
And of course, that's bound to happen. The story feels a bit apocalyptic. Imagine yourself being forced through a stargate when you find yourself under attack. And then imagine yourself suddenly inside an ancient ship, with a locked-in and unknown destination, no means of returning to Earth, and almost no resources. That should make things crazy.
"She's quite skilled, so she's well-respected," Huffman said of her character. "She's got some power, and she's the only medical officer on board. [But she] definitely has her insecurities. I think she feels like she was, sort of, immediately thrust into this position."
"I think it's overwhelming," she added. "I think the whole experience for everyone is overwhelming. And then all these things come up and we're off-world, and we have ... very little resources. There is a lot of stress and a lot of insecurities, and she takes a lot of that on."
That series debuts on the newly-renamed SyFy with Robert Carylyle and Lou Diamond Phillips on board this October. As for her future on
Smallville? No idea, but maybe we can see her return in bits and pieces, too. Just maybe.
Should Black Canary make some sort of return to Smallville?
