Shear Genius Proclaims Its Winner

shear geniusAfter nine episodes of Shear Genius, the hairstyling reality program finally crowned Anthony Morrison as the winner of the competition. "I'm so happy to be Shear Genius... I can't even put it into words. It means so much," the 40-year-old England-native said after his victory was announced.

Shear Genius premiered on April 11, 2007 and took the viewers behind the scenes to chronicle the hairstyling events leading to a fashion show or a big event. For nearly two months, 12 contestants were put through challenges and weekly eliminations until a winner was determined. Hosted by Jaclyn Smith, the show also included judges like Sally Hershberger, Michael Carl with Rene Fris as the mentor.

The finale of Shear Genius, which aired on Wednesday, May 30, featured the three finalists, Morrison, Daisy Duchens and Ben Mollin, as they went through the definitive challenge, requiring them to use all three disciplines of a hairstylist – cut, color and creativity. The aim of the challenge was to come up with three distinct looks, "Must Use Color," "The Nancy Kwan," and a "Stylists' Choice." In the end, Morrison triumphed over Mollin, who finished in second place, and Duchens, who ranked in third. As the winner, Morrison earned $100,000 in seed money from Nexxus, a chance to style hair for an Allure magazine photo shoot and an apprenticeship with Nexxuss stylist Roy Teeluck.

In the course of the challenge, Morrison expressed his yearning to become the champion. "I would love to win so much. It's kind of recognition for all the years I've been in the industry. I feel I really deserve this…to win it would be the ultimate," he said.

The last challenge was critiqued based on technical ability, creativity, the story was told, and how much the hairstyles complimented the outfits and models. Among the three, Morrison stood out with his story of "Modern Movement,” as he acquired praises from the judges.
