It's game over for professional basketball star Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal, also known as Shaq, and his wife of seven years, Shaunie O'Neal. According to court papers which were filed on Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court and made public on Tuesday, Shaunie cites irreconcilable differences as grounds for the separation which will eventually lead to divorce. Additionally, Shaunie is seeking sole custody of their four minor children, ages 3 to 9, with visitation for Shaq, and an unspecified amount of money for child support.
While Shaunie has another child from a previous relationship (Myles, 11), Shaq has a daughter from a previous relationship (Taahirah, 12), making him the father of six. The family currently resides on Star Island in Miami, Florida.
This isn't the first time Shaquille O'Neal and his wife separated. Shaq first filed for divorce in September 2007 in a Miami-Dade Circuit court. According to the petition, "The marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken", and that Shaunie was "secretive about her assets ... particularly with respect to certain properties owned or titled in either [her] name alone or in other entities" and requests that the court require Shaunie to give a "correct accounting of all money, funds, stocks, bonds, and other securities [including bearer securities]." But after a bitter dispute over whether or not he was hiding money from her, the two later reconciled.
Shaq, who is regarded as of the most dominant players in the history of the NBA, currently plays center as part of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In addition to his thriving basketball career, he has released four rap albums and has appeared in various films like Kazaam, Blue Chips,
and Scary Movie 4
. On TV, he has starred in his own reality shows, including Shaq's Big Challenge
and Shaq Vs.
