What if you had the chance to become young again? It's a theme commonly tackled in films—either the protagonist goes back to an earlier age, or an earlier time, or switches bodies with a younger person, you get the idea—and it's being done again in
17 Again. If anything else, it's a chance to see
Zac Efron outside of the musical films he's been in lately, although you'll still see him play basketball here like in
High School Musical.
Anyway, the film centers on Mike O'Donnell (
Matthew Perry), a man who seemed to have it all. Now at 37, he's not exactly happy with his life, and wishes to go back to his high school days and, perhaps, correct all the mistakes he's made which has led to who he is now. There goes the magic word—and voila! He wakes up aged 17, and enrolls in the same school as his children (
Michelle Trachtenberg and Sterling Knight) to keep watch over them.
What comes next is, well, what you'd probably expect from films like this. 17-year-old Mike makes a splash in high school, bumbling initially but coming out as the cute new guy who attracts the attention of the people the 37-year-old Mike is unhappy about. I'm not dismissing this film outright—we do need something like this once in a while—but this might be the same thing only twisted around. Well, it's something that Zac Efron fans will snap up quickly, I'm sure.
The folks at Moviefone have premiered the film's trailer recently, and if you scroll down just a little bit more, you can watch it.
17 Again also stars
Leslie Mann and
Thomas Lennon. After getting delayed twice—it was originally slated to hit theaters this August—it will finally get a wide release on April 17, 2009.
