The Secret Diary of a Call Girl is a British television series originally on ITV and now currently airing on Showtime, which follows the life of high-class female escort Belle de Jour (Billie Piper), who is torn between her serious feelings for a client and the code of her profession. In addition to her dilemma, she is befriended by Bambi (Ashley Madekwe), a wannabe call girl who aspires to be just like her.
Based on the blogs of a former London call girl, the show gives a closer look on the world of Belle who has worked her way up in the field of escort service by providing the wildest fantasies of her male clients. Her world suddenly turns upside-down when she meets the handsome doctor named Alex, who she has mistaken for a client in a hotel bar. Belle later finds out that Alex is not only good-looking, he is also genuinely caring. And so, Belle faces the most difficult challenge in her career of continuing to have sex for money to a guy she is already falling for. Meanwhile, the bubbly and clingy Bambi seeks Belle’s guidance on becoming a high-scale escort just like her. Belle then becomes an unwilling mentor to this call girl wannabe. Belle and Bambi are also joined by Stephanie (Cherie Lunghi), Belle’s “agent” who knows almost everything about her male clients and Ben (Iddo Goldberg), Belle’s ex-boyfriend and best friend who is the only person who knows about her true profession. Meanwhile, Belle is known as Hannah to her family, who is working as a legal secretary. They are made to believe that Hannah’s job is very demanding that it requires her to work during ungodly hours.
The Secret Diary of a Call Girl is produced by Silverapples Media (Avril MacRory and Paul Duane) and Tiger Aspect Productions. Its first season premiered on September 2007.
