Captain Hazel “Hank” Murphy appears in the Cartoon Network Adult Swim animated series Sealab 2021, parodying the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon Sealab 2020. Though he is supposedly the leader of the undersea research station and the head of the crew, he is also the most insane of them all with the oddest tendencies and a highly unhinged attitude. Rather than act in any leadership capacity, he spends his days engaging in activities such as playing golf at the station’s unsafe reactor core, ordering his crew members to steal cable television so he can watch his beloved series “Chopper Dave,” or running a pirate radio show.

As a child, Captain Hank was severely beaten up by bullies, leading to bitterness in his adulthood and the innate desire to sucker-punch people whenever the opportunity presents itself. He despises Evans from Pod 6 and Bizarro Murphy, whom he considers his worst enemies. He also has a strange obsession with Tony Award-nominated actress Adrienne Barbeau, making a number of references to her in the middle of his rants, and calling a robot the Barbeaubot. He also has a tendency to complain about his missing Happy Cake oven, and generally makes his crew’s lives miserable most of the time.
