If there's anyone we'd like to applaud for his work in the past eight years, it's series creator Bill Lawrence doing Scrubs. Now that the show's in its ninth season, we're liking the guy even more. Even though we had our reservations regarding the new cast, the Sacred Heart laughs and jokes we've learned to embrace are still around and flourishing.
If we wanted to learn the formula for the success of the series, let's see what Lawrence himself has to say. On an interview with the Toronto Sun, the producer discussed what season 9 will bring to long-time fans and those new to the show.
"This is a completely different show but with some of the same characters," Lawrence explained. "It is tonally the same. We want to keep the
Scrubs brand. But I would say it's a little bit like The Paper Chase, with a hospital setting."
Protagonist J.D. (Zach Braff) will still be around for a few episodes, but the focus of the new
Scrubs will be Lucy, a quirky med student played by Kerry Bische. She's the one taking over the role of narrator for the show.
"Zach's there for the first six or eight episodes," the
Scrubs creator went on. "John and Donald are regulars. The only person who survived of the new people (from the eighth season) was Eliza Coupe, who is a regular, too. I really like her, I thought she did well with this stuff. But 80% are new actors."
Another thing that's new is the setting. Instead of
Scrubs scenes being done mostly in a hospital, they're moving it to a new location - med school.
"When they're in the hospital, you'll see the familiar faces from the show. So we've created a world in which the hospital still exists, they're still there, but there are a bunch of new people as well."
With all that going on for
Scrubs, it's only fitting that we give this revamped show a chance. It's already caused a lot of hype with its double-episode premiere, and we're just waiting for the show to go on. Give it a shot, and maybe even another season. We certainly wouldn't mind that.
