We'll get about four fewer hours of Olivia Pope and the Gladiators on our television screens this season.
Kerry Washington's pregnancy has had a trickle down effect to her hit ABC show Scandal
. Season 3 was originally set for 22 episodes, but now TVLine is reporting
that it will be downsized to 18 episodes.
ABC didn't give an official explanation for the shortened season according to TVLine, but it's not that difficult to read between the lines, considering the fact that Washington is due in the spring, right when the show would've originally wrapped.
TVLine had previously reported
that Washington's pregnancy -- she is married to NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha -- would not be incorporated into the storyline of her character. Thank goodness because Olivia has enough on her hands: mistress to the president, her job as a fixer and her recent reunions with her are-they-good-or-are-they-bad parents -- a pregnancy storyline would've just been too much, not to mention, ridiculous.
Scandal is preparing for its highly anticipated fall finale which will air Thursday at 10pm on ABC. The show will then take an extended break before returning Feb. 27 with the final eight episodes.
Although it's not ideal to shorten an already-set season, it makes sense, rather than have Olivia running around in loose-fitting clothes (not exactly her style) or just have her behind big objects like a desk or ... yeah, that wouldn't make sense either. But that just means the drama, tension and shocking moments will have to be condensed tightly, which in the long run could make for better storytelling.
