Saturday Night Live has always welcomed politicians to Studio 8H with open arms. John McCain even hosted the late-night sketch show a few years back. Prior to the 2000 presidential elections, both George W. Bush and Al Gore made surprise appearances. Hillary Clinton showed up during her campaign last year, as did Barack Obama.
OK Magazine is reporting that Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin may be next. Rumors are flying that Palin could make an appearance on
Saturday Night Live as early as this weekend. Palin's security team has reportedly done a thorough walk-through of the
Saturday Night Live studio (though I'm not sure why this is necessary). Will Sarah Palin make an SNL cameo?
In addition, the word is that
Tina Fey, fresh off a bevy of Emmy wins for NBC comedy
30 Rock, will return to SNL to reprise her impersonation of Palin. The most likely scenario is that Palin would appear alongside Fey's version, much like Hillary Clinton did last season next to Amy Poehler's spot-on impersonation. At this point, there is nothing concrete, but it certainly seems a likely scenario.
Although the opening sketch of
Saturday Night Live's season premiere more or less eviscerated Palin, thanks to Fey's incredible performance as the Alaska governor, it makes sense for Palin to make an appearance on SNL. Politically, it's good for a candidate to show a sense of humor, that they can laugh at themselves. Fey and Poehler, however, really kind of tore her apart. Staying away wouldn't necessarily hurt her campaign. It's not like voters expect Palin to appear on SNL. For all the talk that SNL has a liberal bias, they've always given conservative politicians equal time. Consider that John McCain and Rudy Giuliani have hosted the show in recent years.
