Fans will be pleased to know that the Sci Fi  network has green lit the production of the sophomore season of Sanctuary, the series that follows the adventures of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), a brilliant scientist who runs a sanctuary for a group of strange and sometimes terrifying beings that hide among humans while she studies them and attempts to help them.

Sanctuary originally premiered as a series of webisodes distributed over the Internet.  But the success of these webisodes led the Sci Fi Channel to pick up the series for a more traditional television-based 13-episode season.  And soon, fans will be able to enjoy another batch of 13 new installments, which is expected to premiere next year.

"Sci Fi will continue to trail blaze the television landscape by further exploring the many worlds of Sanctuary through its unique green screen environments," network executive vice president Mark Stern said in a statement.  "Technology and great storytelling makes Sanctuary a fantastic addition to Sci Fi's 2009 lineup."

In the meantime, fans can enjoy a new episode of Sanctuary tonight.  “Instinct,” which marks the 11th installment of the series before the two-part first season ender in January, follows Magnus and the Sanctuary team as they attempt to capture a rare and deadly creature inside an evacuated building where, earlier that day, three people had been found inside, brutally killed by the strange creature. Unbeknownst to them, they are under the watchful eye of a local news crew, Amy Saunders and her cameraman Zach Spencer, who are desperate to get their first exclusive news story.  With the police trying to handle the delicate situation, the duo also go in search of the culprit, but they are completely unprepared for the powerful beast that they find.

Sanctuary airs tonight at 10/9c on the Sci Fi Channel.
