1970s teen idol David Cassidy returns to the small screen tonight with the premiere of ABC Family comedy Ruby and The Rockits. Cassidy, who rose to fame Shirley Jones's eldest Keith on The Partridge Family, will appear alongside brother Patrick on the show that was developed and written by, yes, another Cassidy - Shaun.
Ruby and The Rockits follows former teen idol Patrick Gallagher (Patrick) who has chosen to lead a quiet life with his wife and two sons. One day, however, his "normal" life is disrupted when his former band mate and brother David (David) shows up unexpectedly on his doorstep with his new-found teenage daughter in tow - Ruby. Suddenly, the Gallagher family's life is thrown upside down. The two used to be together in a synth-glam band called the Rockits in the 1980s.
David tries to enlist the help of Patrick as he refuses to give up on his glory days. He seeks Patrick's help in raising Ruby while he continues to perform. For his part, Patrick must then put the past with David behind them in order to help raise Ruby and keep order within the rest of the Gallagher clan.
Shaun Cassidy created 1990s satirical horror series
American Gothic and sci-fi program Invasion. Ryan Cassidy is the lead set dresser, making the family affair for the Cassidy's complete.
Ruby and The Rockits also stars Alexa Vega of
Spy Kids and Austin Butler of
Zoey 101.
In the pilot, Ruby (Vega) shows up at the Florida casino where David is flogging the tail end of his legend to announce that she is his daughter and is staying put. He asks a little rum to be added to his fizzy water, but otherwise takes the news relatively well.
