Emmy Award-winning actress Lauren “Laurie” Metcalf was born on June 16, 1955 in Carbondale, Illinois. The daughter of a librarian and a university comptroller, she’s also the niece of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Zoe Akins. After an active childhood in stage acting, Laurie Metcalf pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Theater at Illinois State University alongside fellow students such as John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. She went on to roles in numerous television series, among them
Malcolm in the Middle,
Monk,
3rd Rock from the Sun,
Frasier,
Grey’s Anatomy, and
Desperate Housewives. Laurie Metcalf has also worked on films such as

Marjorie “Jackie” Harris is played by Laurie Metcalf in the award-winning television comedy
Roseanne. Roseanne’s younger sister, she’s an intelligent and warm individual, yet also highly sensitive and an underachiever. Lacking self-confidence and faith in her own abilities, she sometimes lets Roseanne take charge of her life, which has caused tension between the two of them. She becomes livelier and more colorful as time goes on, even after experiencing a number of unstable relationships, and often gets seemingly crazy ideas. Jackie has worked in a factory, as a police officer, and as a truck driver.
