Rock Star: Supernova, born of Mark Burnett's magical womb, is an entertaining little gem. It's
American Idol for people who actually like good music. Undeniably, the best aspect of the program (and what makes it more than just a mere talent show) is that the winner is immediately inserted into a high-profile rock band. Last year it was 80's heavy INXS who needed a lead singer, and found one in J.D. Fortune. He has been a success. This year, the contestants are competing to front "super-group" Supernova, a band comprised of Tommy Lee (Motley Crue drummer), Jason Newsted (Metallica's bassist), and Gilby Clarke (Guns n' Roses rhythm guitarist). This unique "prize" for
Rock Star: Supernova is what makes it significant. It gives the entire program extra weight and substance.
Or, at least it should.
Watching this year's ROCK STAR incarnation, I can't help but feel that Supernova isn't as serious about acquiring a great lead singer as they should be. Recently, eliminated ROCK STAR contestant Jenny Galt gave an interview in The Edmonton Sun that was none too flattering to the members of Supernova. She insinuated that the members weren't serious about Supernova, as evidenced by the poor quality of the first single that
Rock Star contestants got to hear and the fact that two of the members have current commitments to other bands.
Is this only a bitter reality show contestant venting her rage over her elimination? Possibly, but what she says rings true. I don't get the sense by watching Tommy, Jason and Gilby that they are truly invested in Supernova other that as a means of publicity. INXS needed a lead singer, and you could tell by their authenticity during the elimination process last year. As shown by some behind-the-scenes looks at
Rock Star: Supernova, partying may be the key motivation behind the existence of the show. It feels like three ex-stars who became buddy's jammed together a couple of times and decided to have a little fun with it.
I doubt Supernova ever even releases an album. Which is a shame, because if they got serious about it, they have a great group of lead singers to choose from.
