When was the last time you saw the Gavin family and the rest of the men of the New York City firehouse?  It seems like forever ago but luckily, the wait is finally over.  Tonight, FX brings back the acclaimed series Rescue Me for its fifth season, consisting of 22 episodes that will air over 23 weeks.

When we last saw Rescue Me, the sighting of Jimmy's “ghost” was the talk of the firehouse, while Colleen blamed Tommy for her failed relationship.  Tommy, on the other hand, came up with a way to fix his own problem.  Unfortunately, Tommy’s father died after spending time with him in a ball game.

In the fifth season opener of Rescue Me called “Baptism,” Tommy struggles to deal with the death of his father and the possible expulsion from the firehouse for reckless behavior on the job.  He also finds himself in a relationship with Valerie that has already burned out.  To make matters worse, a foreign reporter brings an international perspective and a collection of 9/11 footage to the firehouse, where things start to unravel.

Meanwhile, FX has already ordered additional 18 episodes for the sixth season of Rescue Me, which stars Denis Leary, Adam Ferrara, Michael Lombardi, Steven Pasquale, Andrea Roth, John Scurti, Daniel Sunjata and Callie Thorne.

"Rescue Me is one of the very best series on television and a tentpole program for FX," FX president John Landgraf said in a statement.  "We're amazed by the quality of episodes for the upcoming fifth season, which are some of the best they've ever produced. I believe this show will continue to maintain a level of excellence for several years to come and we're thrilled to pick it up for a sixth season."

"Peter, Denis and Jim continue to produce inspired work and the sixth season renewal is a validation of their efforts," Sony Pictures president Zack Van Amburg said in a statement.
