Denis Leary stars in Rescue Me Fans of FX's Rescue Me will be delighted to know that the cable network has renewed the critically-acclaimed drama series for another year.

FX has ordered 22 episodes of Rescue Me for its fifth season, which will be split and aired in two distinct blocks.  Production for the new season is scheduled to begin in the Spring.

Rescue Me
is a firehouse drama set in New York City after the September 11 terrorist attacks. The show stars Denis Leary Tom Gavin, a firefighter and recovering alcoholic who suffers from post-traumatic disorder.  For the role, The 50-year-old actor-comedian has twice been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

Aside from Denis Leary, who co-created the series with Peter Tolan and Jim Serpico, Rescue Me's cast also includes Oscar winner Tatum O'Neal, Gina Gershon, Steven Pasquale, Michael Lombardi, Daniel Sunjata, Larenz Tate and Andrea Roth.

The series debuted on FX in 2004, and has since then become a favorite of viewers of critics and alike.  Last season, first-run episodes of the show drew an average of 2.8 million viewers and 1.9 million adults 18-49, as evidenced by Nielsen Media Research data.  As with any FX original drama series, each episode was re-aired three times throughout the week, pushing the viewer total to 4.8 million.

When Rescue Me returns for its fifth season next year, fans can expect to see the return of all the show's regular cast members.  Denis Leary, along with Tolan and Serpico, will continue serving as the show's executive producers and showrunners.

FX Networks president John Landgraf praised the show's creators and the ensemble cast, hailing it “one of the best ... on television.”

Landgraf also said that Rescue Me “has been a great source of pride to FX, and remains one of the cornerstones of our respected brand of original series.”

While Rescue Me has been renewed, the jury is still out on the drama Damages, which wrapped up its first season last month
