Teen Choice Awards 2012: Top Moments from the Show
Monday, July 23, 2012
The annual teen party of glitz and glamor brought celebrities from the music, television and film industries together Sunday night. Twilight received the night's top surfboard prize -- Ultimate Choice -- and Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber also won a slew of awards.
Here are some of the more memorable moments from the show.
The Fog Before the Storm
What you didn't see on television was what happened at a pre-party for the awards show, when a fog system on stage malfunctioned, sending six people to the hospital and injuring 20 with respiratory problems and burn injuries, according to reports. The party was promptly shut down.
Pretty in Pink
Sophia Grace and Rosie, the too-cute English girls who are frequent guests on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, were awarded pint-sized surfboards by the funny lady herself for being Web Stars. The YouTube stars, dressed in matching pink tutus and tiaras, were overwhelmed with excitement, screaming, "This is the best thing that's ever happened!"
Some Assembly Required
British-Irish boy band One Direction were winners for Breakout Group, Summer Music Group and Love Song ("What Makes You Beautiful"). But because they couldn't attend the show, they send their thanks via a pretty funny video message. The five guys are shown receiving their award -- a surfboard -- but in broken pieces. I guess an entire surfboard can't be shipped overseas. Complete with IKEA-like directions, the guys try to put the board together with tape, hammer and glue. It's a silly and goofy bit, and sure beat the standard acceptance speech.
Happy Birthday, Selena
Not only did Selena Gomez accept the surfboard on behalf of her band, Selena Gomez & the Scene, after winning Music Group, she was surprised with a a tray of cupcakes that were topped with sparklers as the audience -- including her BFF Taylor Swift and boyfriend Justin Bieber -- sang "Happy Birthday" to celebrate her 20th. It was an odd choice to have comedian Kevin Hart do the whole bit, however. Not only was it amusing to see Gomez towering over Hart, but wouldn't it have been more meaningful to have someone close to Gomez (Swift or Bieber, perhaps?) with her on stage?
Giving Back to the Fans
Maybe it's because they've won 41 Teen Choice surfboards for the Twilight series, but Robert Pattinson didn't seem to want the latest award he won, Ultimate Choice, also with his cast mates Kristen Stewart and Taylor Launter. Pattinson handed off his board to a group of screaming girls. How they're going to decide who should take it home is beyond me. Stewart then followed Pattinson's lead and gave hers away too. Not Lautner though!
Back and Better Than Ever?
This isn't a slight at No Doubt, but much of the teenage audience was far from being born when the group got together in the '80s. But that didn't stop them from debuting their single "Settle Down," ahead of their Sept. 25 album release. And they sounded great.
While accepting Movie Comedy for 21 Jump Street, Jonah Hill gave a special shout out to the man who he lost to at the Oscars this year.
"I lost to ... Christopher Plummer. I'd just like to point out that he's not nominated for anything tonight," Hill said of his 82-year-old opponent. "So I'm better." Hill also mentioned his co-star in 21 Jump Street, who was not present. "I would like to thank my favorite male exotic dancer, Mr. Channing Tatum."
Jordin Sparks, Adam Rodriguez and Paul Wesley were involved in one of the funnier bits while presenting an award. Sparks marvels and then gets flustered at the fact that she's between a vampire and a male stripper and fans herself. Rodriguez reaches into his jacket pocket and pulls out something to help wipe the sweat off Sparks' forehead -- and it's a red, white and blue thong! Rodriguez exclaims he doesn't know what that is, as Sparks looks grossed out and drops it on the floor.
The Grand Finale
Carly Rae Jepsen performed her mega hit "Call Me Maybe," but not without help from a lot of people. Celebrities and fans alike were shown on the big screen behind her lip-syncing to the song and showing off some moves. Fans submitted online videos while familiar faces like DJ Pauly D, Tia and Tamara Mowry and Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family) were taped on the red carpet.
