The nominations for the 84 Annual Academy Awards were announced Tuesday morning, and the news was great for two big films. Martin Scorsese's Hugo topped all films with 11 nominations while the acclaimed silent movie The Artist received 10 nominations.

Both are among the nine films nominated for Best Picture, a list which also includes heavy favorites The Help, The Descendants and Moneyball.

While the Oscar nominations typically feature all dramas, this year the Academy did make an exception for one big comedy. Bridesmaids scored nominations for Supporting Actress Melissa McCarthy as well as a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

As a TV critic, I'm particularly excited by some of this year's Oscar nominations for writing. Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig will compete for Original Screenplay with Bridesmaids while the Adapted Screenplay nominees include The West Wing's Aaron Sorkin (Moneyball) and Allen Gregory's Nat Faxon and Community's Jim Rash (The Descendants).

If I had to pick one absolute favorite nominations from this year's Oscars, it has to be The Muppets getting a Best Original Song nomination for "Man or Muppet" written by Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie. The song was performed by Jason Segel and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons, and the thought of them performing it at the Oscars has me excited. As an added bonus, its only competition is "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio, a song that featured the voices of Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez and will.i.am. That could make for another solid musical performance.

And composer John Williams scores his 46th and 47th Oscar nominations this year, competing against himself for the scores of The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse. However, this is nothing new for Williams as he frequently scores double nominations for Best Score, most recently in 2006 for Memoirs of a Geisha and Munich.
