The CW announced it's upcoming fall schedule
today, which includes an unusual new show for the network with the 16th century historical drama, Reign.
The pilot episode was filmed at a castle in Ireland.
The series stars Adelaide Kane (Teen Wolf) as Mary, Toby Regbo (One Day) as Prince Francis, Torrance Coombs (The Tudors) as Bash, Megan Follows (Anne of Green Gables) as Queen Catherine, Alan Van Sprang (The Tudors) as King Henry, Celina Sinden as Greer, Caitlin Stasey as Kenna, Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) as Lola, and Jenessa Grant (Cyberbully) as Aylee
Reign is based on the real-life story of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was only 6 days old when she took the throne after her father's death. The story begins with Mary arriving in France to meet the man she's arranged to marry, Prince Francis.
Check out the first preview for Reign.
Mary arrives in France with four friends who serve as her ladies-in-waiting. While she's supposed to be engaged to Prince Francis, it's his half-brother Bash, that catches the Queen's eye.
It's a story full of romance and political intrigue that takes place in a much different time, though the emotions and complications are sure to be similar to those today.
Check out a sneak peek of the Queen's arrival.
While Mary and Francis' marriage has been arranged, they have known each other since their childhood. Their reunion is somewhat awkward, but in this short clip they seem to have affection for each other.
A seer though warns Francis' mother of a dangerous future for her son with Mary by his side, "I saw your son's future. His union with Mary. ... She will cost Francis his life."
When Reign's description was first announced, I wasn't sure how well it would fit on the CW. After seeing the clips and reading the full show synopsis, it appears to be an excellent choice. The 16th century setting will provide a unique world for a romance drama.
Without mobile phones, television, cars, and other modern technologies, the environment may be different, but the ways of the heart haven't changed all that much over the centuries. Both Mary and Francis appear to be quite charming. It's definitely a show that I'll check out.
Is Reign on your must-see list? Or, is it not your cup of tea?
Reign will air Thursdays at 9 pm ET after The Vampire Diaries starting this fall on the CW.
