Biography

Born Hal Harry Magee Sparks III on September 25, 1969 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hal Sparks is best known for his several shows on VH1 and his regular role on the series Queer As Folk. He grew up in Peaks Mill, Kentucky until he was 14, and during that time, he almost died four times and was even in coma once. He decided to be in show business upon seeing Randy Savage wrestle in their elementary school gym. As a kid, his mom used to drop him off at the movie theater during summers and he would watch the same two movies all day, horror, comedy, romance, or action, and he would absorb everything like a sponge.

Sparks moved to Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb on the northern part of Chicago, the summer before his sophomore year and lived with his dad. There, he went to New Trier High School while his dad fixed up the house so they could afford it. It was in Chicago that Sparks decided that he wanted to do comedy for a living, much to his father's dismay. He did his first stand-up routine at 15, and, with the help of his acting teacher, he taped it and submitted it to a local radio station.

Sparks then moved to Los Angeles a couple of weeks after he graduated from high school. In Los Angeles, he said he got a reputation for being funny but was dismissed by a Comedy Central booker because there was "nothing special" about him. He then got some writing jobs and a gag man for older comedians, then decided to form his own sketch group. This group eventually split up and Sparks once again found himself doing stand-ups alone. Shortly thereafter, he landed a significant role in the 2000 comedy Dude Where's My Car? and the series Queer As Folk.

Sparks is a contestant in the VH1 reality series Celebracadabra, where celebrities are taught different forms of magic by veteran magicians. Each week, the celebrities are judged and one gets eliminated, en route to a grade prize of $100,000.
