Pussycat Dolls: Carmit Barchar's Medical Mission with Operation Smile

It looks like 2008 could be a busy year for the Pussycat Dolls. The girls’ blogs hint at a possible new Pussycat Dolls album, and of course, Founder Doll, Robin Antin, will be getting the second season of Pussycat Dolls Present underway.

Meanwhile, the current Pussycat Dolls are taking advantage of the hiatus for the group to branch out. In Carmit Barchar’s case, it’s given her the chance to pursue a charitable endeavor close to her heart.

As we’ve reported previously, Carmit has teamed up with Operation Smile, “a worldwide children's medical charity dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults born with facial deformities.” It’s an important cause for Carmit because she was actually born with a cleft palate herself.

She’s recently returned from a medical mission to Bolivia with Operation Smile, and talked about the trip, and her own charitable organization called “Smile with Me,” on her Pussycat Dolls blog.

Carmit wrote, “In November I took a creative team of five, which included my mom;), and we went on a medical mission with Operation Smile to Bolivia…This was a journey of a lifetime with rewards beyond words.....we had all kinds of creative activities for the kids during the screening process and before surgery.”

One young fellow in particular made an impact with Carmit. She wrote about working with him on an art project.

“There was this boy named Carlos Andres, he was 9 years old. He had never painted before in his life and he went to town painting the whole canvas with details like a natural! His mother never even knew he was interested or had a gift in that area. I hope we inspired him to follow his creativity wherever it takes him.... we even made him a special care package filled with art supplies.”

Carmit has said herself that the arts, in addition to the needed corrective surgery, all contributed to her overall recovery and made her who she is today. So she was clearly touched by the chance to work with these children on creative endeavors in addition to seeing the medical aspect.

She was also very impressed with the latter, though, and wrote, “Its truly phenomenal what these doctors accomplish, not to mention they all volunteer!”

Feeling inspired, she says, “This is just the beginning and I can't wait to start planning the future for Smile With Me!”
