The coveted role of fake psychic Shawn Spencer's mom has finally been cast.  Cybill Shepherd, known for her Moonlighting days as P.I. Madolyn "Maddie" Hayes, has signed on to play the character for a mutli-episode arc on USA Network's Psych.

Returning with new episodes on July 18, Psych stars James Roday as young police consultant Shawn Spencer, whose "heightened observational skills" and impressive detective instincts allow him to convince people that he is psychic.  The show also features Dulé Hill as Shawn's best friend, straight man and reluctant partner Gus, as well as Corbin Bernsen as Shawn's captious father, Henry.

Spencer's mom, also known as Henry's ex-wife, was introduced in the final moments of the second season finale of Psych when she showed up unannounced on Shawn's doorstep. Viewers, however, were not able to see her face.

On her Psych debut episode, Shepherd will play mom Madeleine, a private practice psychologist who, after spending a few years abroad, returns to Santa Barbara to pay her ex-hubby and son a visit but ends up helping them with a case.  Described as a free spirit and the source of Shawn's adventurous side, her character is also expected to stir up a few memories, issues, and a bit of trouble.

Shepherd, who most recently appeared on The L Word as Phyllis Kroll, is also known for her roles in The Last Picture Show as Jacy, and as Betsy in Taxi Driver.  Her other notable credits include Cybill, a sitcom she starred on and served as producer, Chances Are, where she co-starred with Robert Downey, Jr., Ryan O'Neal, and Mary Stuart Masterson, and Texasville, which is a sequel to The Last Picture Show.

Psych also stars Timothy Omundson as Carlton Lassiter, Maggie Lawson as Juliet "Jules" O'Hara, and Kirsten Nelson as Karen Vick.
