Project Runway: Heidi Klum Speaks Frankly about Fitness

It can be hard to imagine, but even a supermodel like Heidi Klum, Victoria's Secret model and host of Project Runway, can sometimes find it hard to fit into high fashion.

"I was never a skinny, skinny type…” she recently told Britain's Easy Living magazine. In another interview with Arena magazine, she went on to say, “I used to complain that I couldn't seem to fit into the clothes for the edgy fashion show.”

She admits that she had felt pressure at times to try to drop weight in order to better fit the editorial and high-fashion aesthetic. But in the end, it would appear that any attempt at starving herself wound up being counterproductive.

She says “The more I tried [dieting], the worse it was. I'd think about food more than ever…They'd say 'You have to lose weight', and I'd be like, 'All I can think about is muffins!' "

Ultimately, the Project Runway host decided that she didn't “want to get to skinny” and that she wants “to have a round, womanly figure.” She might cut out the carbs and sweets occasionally, as she did to lose the baby weight after each of her three pregnancies, but asserts that she's “not a freak with working out and food.” She'll eat pasta if she wants to, and even indulges in pastries every once in a while.

And it wouldn't seem that her moderation and occasional splurge have hurt her career at all. As we recently reported, thanks to her success with Project Runway, Victoria's Secret and other endeavors, Klum recently made Forbes list of most highly-paid models. Sure, at 8 million dollars a year, she was one million behind a waif, Kate Moss. But they both were way behind another curvy supermodel, Gisele Budchen, who came in with 33 million dollars.

Her comments echo sentiments from a fellow supermodel turned reality television powerhouse, Tyra Banks. Tyra has also been open, both on America's Next Top Model and her own talk show, about her feelings about her curves.

While their success with Victoria's Secret and other modeling endeavors shows their look definitely has fans, it's clear that the waif-life or rail-thin look creates some challenges not only for the average woman looking at a magazine, but even for some of those models' high-powered peers in the industry.
