Irina Shabayeva: Winner of 'Project Runway' Season 6
Irina Shabayeva: Winner of 'Project Runway' Season 6
After months of oddball challenges, tension in the workroom, and tears on the catwalk, the highly anticipated finale of Project Runway 6 has come.  And now it's over.  All that boils down to one thing though: the woman who will take home the much-coveted prize.  In this case, we're talking about Irina Shabayeva.

Many believed it was a tough competition when the three finalists - Irina, Althea and Carol Hannah - showed off their collections in Bryant Park.  With 13 looks each up on the runway, it seemed impossible to predict who would emerge victorious.

We first believed the ill Carol Hannah wouldn't make it to the runway show, given her stomach condition.  But her recovery was a miracle, even though that miracle didn't involve winning the competition.  She did, however, land third place for her set.

As we expected from her, she came up with a girly collection that flowed about the runway.  Unfortunately, the clothes didn't have the unifying theme that the judges were looking for and she was the first one out.

Althea, meanwhile, explained her sci-fi basis for the collection which really piqued the interest of the audience.  It was mostly pants and sportswear, but it was too typical to be worthy of the Project Runway crown.

As for Irina, she came up with edgy New York-inspired pieces which, she said, was about "comforting and shielding" yourself.  Michael Kors noted how the "warrior woman" idea in Irina's collection has been used before, but they nevertheless named her the winner.

"I can't believe it!" Irina exclaimed.  "I'm definitely proud of myself.  I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I did have some stiff competition."

As for Models of the Runway, it was Kalyn Hemphill who snagged the win thanks to Irina.

Well, that's it for season 6 of Project Runway, which felt a lot less exciting than we hoped for.  Let's all just look forward to the next installment and mark our calendars for season 7 on January 14.  For now, let's make like Heidi and go auf wiedersehen
