BuddyTV is looking at the 17 new shows the major networks will premiere this Fall to see which ones are worth getting excited about and which ones we have low expectations for.
Show Description: Jay Mohr and Paula Marshall star as divorced parents who attempt to juggle raising their child, living their new life apart, and embarking on new relationships. Gary (Jay Mohr) is a painting contractor and has difficulty handling his somewhat controlling ex-wife, with whom he'd been married for 15 years.
When: Wednesdays at 8:30pm on CBS
Cast: Jay Mohr, Paula Marshall, Jamie King, Laura Marano, Ryan Malgarini
Anticipation: Low. The preview clips CBS has provided have done nothing to quell the fears that this will just be another crappy sitcom. While the subject matter is intriguing, the cutesy and over-acting child star is going to get annoying fast and Jay Mohr seems out-of-place in the sympathetic dad role. I like that the series will shine a favorable light on a divorced dad (Hollywood tends to demonize that role), but it doesn't look like the laughs will be there.
Project Gary seems about as compelling to me as watching paint dry. The Gary of the title, played by Jay Mohr, conveniently owns his own painting business, so the powers that be behind
Project Gary could have gone that route without perceptibly affecting the outcome. There is little that sets
Project Gary apart from other bland sitcoms in the ilk of
8 Simple Rules or
Still Standing. You know exactly what you're getting with all of them: unwacky hijinx involving uncool dads and their one-dimensional teenage kids. Stay away.
Similar Shows: It's a family sitcom, despite the premise.
According to Jim and
Two and a Half Men come to mind.
