Yet another dark psychological thriller is coming to Showtime this summer and it comes in the form of Penny Dreadful
. The eight-episode series from John Logan explores classic horror stories and serves as platform for creepy characters from literature to come alive.
The new video teaser below doesn't give away too much but it's enough to give you a feel of how much twisted this series is by showing literary references as various narrators read passages that are being stitched in a very disturbing manner.
To give viewers a deeper understanding of Penny Dreadful, Showtime has released a behind-the-scenes featurette in which the cast, as well as the series creator, talk about what the show is all about. "This show is about how, within all of us, we have secrets. We have demons," says Logan. "There's a reason we're still reading Frankenstein 200 years later. Why Dracula still frightens us. One of the joys of Penny Dreadful is where we come into sync with the classic text and where we deviate."
To further promote the series, Showtime has released several posters to introduce the characters of Penny Dreadful, which boasts quite an impressive cast.
Timothy Dalton, best known for portraying James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, plays Sir Malcolm, an African explorer who is willing to "murder the world" to save his daughter.
Josh Hartnett, who is credited for Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, 40 Days and 40 Nights, and 30 Days of Night, stars as Ethan Chandler, a charming American with dark secrets who helps Sir Malcolm in his personal quest.
Eva Green, who is known for her work in Kingdom of Heaven and Casino Royale, stars as Vanessa Ives, the mysterious and seductive clairvoyant who's battling her own demons. According to co-star Danny Sapani, she "represents the heart of Penny Dreadful and the duality of good and evil."
Reeve Carney, who starred as Peter Parker in the Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, plays Dorian Gray, a wealthy young man with a reckless attitude.
Harry Treadaway, who is credited for City of Ember and The Disappeared, stars as eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, the protagonist of Mary Shelley's novel who needs no introduction.
Billie Piper, who is famous for playing Rose Tyler on Doctor Who, portrays Brona Croft, a poor Irish immigrant with a dark past who forms a connection with Ethan Chandler.
Danny Sapani, who appeared in the film Trance, plays Sembene, who serves as Sir Malcolm's confidant.
