'Passions' Actor Releases Self-titled Album
Wednesday, September 19, 2007

passionsMusic is another thing that keeps Eric Martsolf preoccupied besides his work on the soap Passions where he plays Ethan Winthrop.  In fact, he has just released his self-titled contemporary pop rock album, which is available for grabs at his MySpace site and from iTunes, and will be soon offered for download through various digital sites, including Napster and Rhapsody.

"It has a bit of an '80s element to it," the Passions actor explained to Soap Opera Digest.  "It's funny, because you're hearing that all over the radio right now with bands like The Killers.  I'm an adolescent from the '80s and was in an '80s cover band for years, so I had to throw some of that into my album."

What's unique about his album is his inspiration for doing some of the songs, which comes in the form of characters and storylines from Passion.

"I had the fans in mind when I chose these [original] songs," Martsolf said. "One is called 'Liar' and it's so Gwen yelling at Theresa.  It's hilarious. Another one is 'Hold on to Me,' which is Ethan and Theresa's song and might be appearing in a montage coming up. We had fun making the album. It's not deep or serious."

Although the soap actor can conveniently come up with an album with today's advance technology, he remains to an advocate of old school procedures and raw talent.

"No computers, sequencing or sampling.  It's not over-processed," he said.  "The problem with a lot of music now is that it shoots right out of a computer.  With ProTools and computer instrumentation, anybody can have a CD and make themselves sound good.  This is just a bunch of talented musicians in the studio, from instrument to amp to tape, and I'm proud of that."

Fans can catch Eric Martsolf on Passions Mondays to Thursdays at 2pm EST on DirecTV.
