NASCAR racer Jamie McMurray Guest Stars on 'Passions'

Jamie McMurry on PassionsJamie McMurray, a NASCAR race car driver who competes full-time at the NEXTEL Cup Series, is making his daytime television debut on the soap opera Passions, a gig that he claims made him more uneasy than driving on the racetrack.

“You don't want to be the one who screws it up [for] everyone who is doing the scene.  You don't want everyone to do their lines perfectly and then go, 'Uh, why did he mess it up?'" McMurray told Soap Opera Digest.  The 31-year-old professional racer will make his cameo appearance on Passions on September 26.

Upon receiving the script for his brief appearance, McMurray said he thought it was “pretty far-fetched,” and did not memorize his lines until the day of the shoot.

“It's not hard to remember — I just had two or three real simple lines — it's hard to remember when the cue is coming up,” McMurray told Soap Opera Digest.  “[Juliet Mills, who plays Tabitha, and Heidi Mueller, who plays Kay] are having a conversation and then all of a sudden you have to talk. You don't really think about it, but it's difficult.  What people don't realize at home is that it's not just the three of you talking; it's you three talking and 40 people standing [nearby] that a viewer doesn't see.  So there are a lot more people watching than you realize.”

Fortunately for McMurray, the scene, which also includes actor James Hyde (Sam), was filmed after only a couple of takes.  The NASCAR star theorizes the show wasn't too concerned with his acting skills, and believes he did a good job anyway, since he was able to pull off what the scene required him to do: look confused.

“I did a great job of being confused.  I wasn't acting,” he said, laughing.

Joking aside, McMurray said he enjoyed working on Passions because the cast and crew treated him nicely.  “That makes you want to do more things like this when you have such a good experience,” he said, “and there were smokin' hot chicks.  It was great!”

So great, in fact, that he will now try to catch more of the daytime drama, which recently found a new home on DirectTV.

“I will pay more attention to [Kay, Tabitha and Sam] now because I was a part of it and feel like I better understand what's going on with them,” he said.
