Robert Clohessy was born on June 10, 1958 in the Bronx, New York. He is the son of John Clohessy, a police officer. Robert would eventually go on to pursue higher learning at SUNY Purchase, and he eventually graduated together with fellow performers Edie Falco, Kirk Acevedo, and Seth Gilliam. He has two sons named Byron and Miles, and his favorite baseball team is the Mets. Back in 1975, he fought in the Golden Gloves at Madison Square Garden. Robert has acted in an extensive number of television productions, among them Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Without a Trace, and All My Children.

Sean Murphy is portrayed by Robert Clohessy in the HBO prison drama television series Oz. He is a correctional officer of Irish-American heritage who is considered to be honest and fair, as opposed to several of his amoral colleagues. He is personally singled out by liberal reformist Tim McManus to assume the role of Emerald City’s Head CO, with the two of them forming strong bonds of friendship. Both Warden Glynn and McManus come to regard Murphy with the utmost of respect, as he consistently proves himself to be unbiased and just, with McManus especially relying on him.
