From actor Ashton Kutcher, Opportunity Knocks
is America's first traveling game show. Each week, host JD Roth and a TV production crew head to a different suburb across America and surprise one lucky family with the chance to win big on a national stage. Taped in their hometown, families have to prove that they do indeed know each other inside and out.
Not particularly sure what to think about this one. It's like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
, if you substituted philanthropy for greed and triviality. Game shows can be fun, and there's something strangely captivating about seeing families answer questions about each other. It's still unclear how personal such questions will be, or if it's all in good fun. Are the producers aiming to expose the possible detachment between family members, or will they simply be out to test the families' trivial knowledge regarding their loved ones?
In theory, Opportunity Knocks
could be a insightful meditation on the lack of connect within suburban families in today's world. Could ABC purposely expose the damage that the information age has inflicted upon the family life of Americans? Or, will it debunk myths that the American family isn't what it once was? Or, will it merely try and put on a good show, and avoid any and all potentially intriguing sociological questions? It's most likely this last possibility, but I'm pulling for Opportunity Knocks
to be more ambitious than its log line might indicate.
Regardless, Opportunity Knocks
is a worthy, low-risk experiment for ABC. It might just be the cheapest series to produce on television this Fall season, and any success that the show brings is icing on the cake.
