Last night's episode of One Tree Hill
finally saw Dan Scott getting out of prison after a four year stint for killing his brother. The CW drama has had many fun and memorable villains over the years, but none of them can compare to the deliciously evil father of Lucas and Nathan. Over the first four seasons of the series we witnessed Dan blackmail his wife, tell his son he should have been aborted, try to break up his other son's marriage, and pay a woman to crush his brother's heart. He's been drugged, shot at, attempted suicide, had a heart attack, and nearly been burned alive, but nothing can keep a good villain down.
Now that Dan (Paul Johansson
) is out of prison and that pesky murder charge is behind him, it's time to ponder what role he'll play in the remainder of One Tree Hill
's fifth season. Will Dan return to town a changed man, or is he truly bad to the bone?
I've been terrified that One Tree Hill
would attempt to redeem Dan ever since he felt pangs of guilt over killing Keith. I don't want a reformed Dan feeling regret over his past actions. While that might be a nice road to follow in real life, it would be painfully boring to watch on screen. If you're going to bring the man back, I demand he be the same scheming, Machiavellian evildoer that he's always been.
Luckily for me, Dan showed signs of slipping back into his evil ways at the end of last night's episode. While he didn't kick a puppy across the room or attempt to light Lucas (Chad Michael Murray
) on fire, he did share a cold one night stand with a woman and then freely admit to offing his brother. I didn't feel any pangs of guilt or regret seeping through his admission. Dan owned up to killing his brother in the same way a normal person might own up to eating their roommate's leftovers.
What can we expect from Dan as the wedding of Lucas and Lindsey rolls forward next week? From what we saw in the preview, it definitely looks like he'll be attending, invited or not. Karen (Moira Kelly
) is also going to be there, which should prove extremely awkward for both of them. Does Dan plan to sabotage the wedding, or is he actually attending in good faith? It's hard to say.
I have no idea what Dan will be up to the rest of the season, but my guess is that he's going to plot some intricate scheme in an attempt to gain custody of Jamie. The nightmares that Jamie has been having about his grandfather could very well be foreshadowing, and now that Nathan (James Lafferty
) and Haley's (Bethany Joy Galeotti
) marriage is falling apart, this could be the perfect time for Dan to strike. Maybe he'll even hook up with evil nanny Carrie so they can run off with the littlest Scott together.
Or maybe, just maybe, Dan is really reformed and wants to do nothing but be a loving father to his sons and a loving grandfather to Jamie. That sounds far too boring for One Tree Hill
, so I'm crossing my fingers for some major villainy in the upcoming episodes.
