One Tree Hill

I know that outlandish and sudsy storylines are definitely part of the appeal of watching primetime soaps such as One Tree Hill, but sometimes, you have just have to say enough is enough. Is it just me, or is anybody else having difficulty suspending disbelief that a social welfare agency would willingly hand over Angie – a real baby with actual health problems – over to Brooke, a young woman, barely out of her teenage years, without so much as a background check?

Notwithstanding my own personal distaste for procreation, I understand that some people actually like children and want to have families. Their reasons are often valid, but I have a hard time getting behind Brooke's decision. As far as I can see, the only reason why she wants a child is to fill the gaping maw of emptiness in her life, something to validate her, to distract her. And also, maybe because adopted foreign babies are the latest in hot accessories, as evidenced by the likes of Madonna and Angelina Jolie who seem to be adopting foreign babies every other week. You might think I'm being way harsh on Brooke but just think of the last few moments of Monday's One Tree Hill when Brooke presented her new brand of toddler clothing. Angie's purpose was solely to further Brooke's career.

Brooke (Sophia Bush) may have a genuine desire to care for a child, but the fact that she takes it as a personal affront that baby Angie will not smile is proof that she is not ready for the responsibility. I don't know, Brooke, maybe it's because Angie has a hole in her heart that she's not full of smiles and giggles. Brooke is still a very young woman and having a baby is not a matter to take lightly. It's not like fostering a kitten or a puppy, and even that requires a lot of work. Hopefully, Angie will only be under Brooke's care until her much needed surgery, and then she'll return home to her parents. By then, I have no doubt that Brooke will have already returned to her usual pattern of flightiness and drama.

The only good that I can see coming out of the baby situation is that bonding over Angie may be bringing Brooke and Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) closer together. I don't care whether they reunite as a couple, as long as Lucas stops pining after Lindsey. There is altogether too much pining occurring on One Tree Hill.
