Season 7 of Once Upon a Time
is finally starting to come together. "Eloise Gardener" solved Captain Roger's mystery while revealing the identity of Captain Hook's daughter. "Pretty in Blue" brought Henry and Ella together while Roni/Regina searched for help in Hyperion Heights. The double feature answered several questions while keeping a few mysteries intact. Now that we've gotten deeper into the story, how does this season measure up with previous seasons of Once Upon a Time
A Whole New Cast
After the finale of Once Upon a Time season 6, fans learned that more than half of the cast would be leaving the show. The writers reworked the characters and the storyline. Andrew J. West has done a great job building Henry Mills' character. Adult Henry has the same optimism as young Henry but has lost some of his naivete.
Season 7 has also introduced us to several new characters. Dania Ramirez is this season's new Cinderella/Jacinda. Ramirez has created a formidable Cinderella in the fairy tale world, and a single mother who makes real mistakes in Hyperion Heights. The writers have created stories with a more diverse cast, and hopefully, they will continue that inclusiveness in the episodes that follow.
New Versions of the Old Stories
One of the best aspects of Once Upon a Time season 1 was the new fairy tale each week. As the show progressed to other seasons, it moved away from storytelling and became more of an adventure show. Season 7 is trying to bring back several elements from the first season. Season 7's first fairy tale was Cinderella, but we have also been introduced to Alice in Wonderland and Rapunzel. Considering the fact that Henry's friend/Lucy's alleged father is named Jack in the fairy tale world and has experience with giants, we will probably get a dose of Jack and the Beanstalk as well. Even though the first season went through many of the same tales, season 7 is reworking them and giving us a different version of each story.
Complicated Family Ties and Endless Mysteries
Once Upon a Time has always had convoluted family trees and season 7 is no different. We discovered that Alice is not only Hook's daughter but also Mother Gothel's daughter. While the writers have continued building convoluted relationships they have left us with a few mysteries as well. Is Weaver actually awake? Who are Henry and Roni/Regina going to see (probably Zelena and Robin)? Where is Anastasia's body? What is Mother Gothel's end game? Is Henry's heart poisoned?
Season 7 of Once Upon a Time is almost a new show. A new cast and new storylines can always be a little shaky at first, but season 7 has come together with interesting plot points and twists.
What do you think of this season so far? Are there still too many storylines? Or do you think the writers brought everything together in episodes 7 and 8? How do you think this season compares to previous seasons of Once Upon a Time? Let us know in the comments below!
