Is 'Once Upon a Time' Juggling Too Many Storylines?
Is 'Once Upon a Time' Juggling Too Many Storylines?

This week's episode of Once Upon a Time, "Wake Up Call," revealed several important plot points, but felt very fragmented. There is a lot going on this season. Henry is pursuing Jacinda, but he is also working with Roni and Detective Rogers to take down Victoria Belfry/Lady Tremaine. Meanwhile, there is drama playing out between Ivy/Drizella and Roni/Regina, and we do not know whether Detective Weaver has his fairy tale memories intact or not. Not to mention the fact that Detective Rogers is hunting down a missing girl and investigating a mysterious rune.

The show writers seem to be attempting to recapture the style of the first season, but the original Once Upon a Time was not quite this chaotic in its infancy. The first season played out a new fairy tale each week. However, it had the overall plot of Henry trying to help everyone regain their memories. There was a clear villain and heroes, and the story line flowed smoothly. Season 7 started out the same way, but has become a little disjointed.

The writers are complicating the storyline by having multiple plots running at the same time. As a result, it has been a while since Detective Rogers has interacted with Henry and it seems like the plan to investigate and take down Victoria Belfry has been forgotten. Instead, Henry is chasing after Jacinda and Roni is struggling with her true identity.

Ideally, the writers will start to bring these stray plots together. Perhaps Detective Roger's missing girl has something to do with Ivy and her witch. Maybe Roni will choose to reveal to Henry that she really is Regina and that his memories are fake. It would be nice if the writers moved the story towards a clear goal.

What do you want to see happen? Should they continue their fight against Victoria Belfry? Should they focus on taking down Ivy? Or should we be paying more attention to Detective Roger's missing girl? Are there too many storylines running at the same time? Let us know in the comments below!
