There was building anticipation leading into the women’s 200 meter run. Packed with three all-star Americans and two powerful Jamaicans, it was sure to go out fast. Allyson Felix was the heavy favorite in the event, holding every title except Olympic gold across 200m (in addition to silvers in both Beijing and Athens). Strong challengers in the race included teammates Sanya Richards-Ross (who won gold in the 400m two days ago) and Carmelita Jeter and Jamaican teammates Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Veronica Campbell-Brown, who beat Felix in the last two Olympics. Campbell-Brown was aiming for a three-peat in the event.
Coming around the bend for the last 100 meters, four girls were lined up: Jeter, Felix, Fraser and Brown. Fraser began pulling away, but Felix responded to the challenge. Before the race, Felix had her game face on — none of that brilliant smile America is used to. She had to work in this 200m, but her last few strides put her enough ahead of Fraser to achieve her elusive dream in just 21.88 seconds. Raising both arms, she beamed, flashing that smile only Felix can deliver. Meanwhile, Fraser was overcome with her silver medal. Tears of joy filled her face as she ran over to get her country’s flag.
Jeter beat out both Richards-Ross and Campbell-Brown for the final medal. She gladly gave Felix a hug, cherishing her second Olympic medal ever. In the end, this race belonged solely to Allyson Felix, who had waited so long for this prestigious title. As a firm Christian believer, she gives all the glory to God. Now she has made America and the world a firm believer in her.
