Ocean's 11
Tuesday, June 24, 2008
There are many fish in the financial ocean, and charismatic thief, Danny (George Clooney), wants to catch the biggest one – to score the most remarkable casino heist in history. In Ocean’s 11, just hours into his parole from a New Jersey penitentiary, Danny’s head is already reeling with ideas. He has three rules in mind – don’t hurt anybody, don’t steal from anyone who doesn’t deserve it, and play the game like you’ve got nothing to lose. Following these, Danny the mastermind already assembles a specialized team of eleven to rob the central, underground vault shared by three Las Vegas casinos: The Bellagio, The Mirage and the MGM Grand. His crew includes ace card sharp Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), demolition expert Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle) and master pickpocket Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon).
The stakes go higher as Danny Ocean finds out that the ruthless owner of the casinos, Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) is dating Danny’s ex-wife Tess (Julia Roberts). It becomes apparent that riches are not only Danny’s motive – he also wants Tess back. If all goes well with Danny’s plans, he can have both, but it seems as though the wry Terry Benedict won’t give up either.
Ocean’s 11 has been praised highly by critics for its flair and snappy pace. It made it to the top spot during its opening weekend, grossing $183,417,150 in the United States. Worldwide, it amassed $450,717,150, which made the film a huge blockbuster hit. In 2001, it became the 6th highest-grossing film, living up to its slick reputation. A remake of the 1960 Rat Pack heist film of the same name, Ocean’s 11 has been said to surpass its original, leading its director to create sequels Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen in 2004 and 2007 respectively.
