Three-time Emmy Award-winning Edie Falco, best known for her lead role on the critically acclaimed HBO series The Sopranos, returns to the small screen on June with the Showtime dark comedy Nurse Jackie. Falco, 45, bagged the titular role in the upcoming series which Showtime described as "wicked, heartbreaking, and funny."
Set to premiere on June 8, Nurse Jackie is reportedly based on the provocative journal of a real-life Manhattan ER nurse. The "flawed" nurse is said to have a dual personality, at once a saint and a sinner. As saint, he is a nurse, wife, and mother; and as sinner, he is addicted to pain killers, adulterer, and even vigilante (she also suffers from Robin Hood complex).
"I started reading a lot of scripts after I finished
The Sopranos. I thought I would know when the right script came - and that's what happened," says Falco, adding that the pilot of Nurse Jackie helps introduce the kind of woman that the character is, as she does some things that conventional wisdom will probably frown at, including throwing the ear in the toilet, giving the money and boots to a young girl, and taking justice into her own hands.
"Jackie always tries to do the right thing even if her means are unconventional... Things aren't always black and white, right or wrong and that's where Jackie lives - in the grey," co-executive producer Richie Jackson adds.
Nurse Jackie started filming in November last year and was shot entirely in New York - in fact, just down the road from Silver Cup studios where The Sopranos used to film. Falco says further that she has been involved in some aspects of the show's production.
"I was included in conversations about production - cast and crew decisions, dialogue, etc. and have been surprised to discover that I actually have opinions about these things and have loved being part of the larger process."
