Broadway marquees will go dark for one minute on Friday, October 3, to pay tribute to Paul Newman. The actor, who died last week due to complications from lung cancer, may be well known for his roles in films such as
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and
butch, but he also had a colorful career on Broadway.
After studying acting in New York, he debuted on the Broadway production of
Picnic in 1953, which attracted the attention of Hollywood agents and catapulted him to a successful film career. He headlined several other plays, and eventually received a Tony nomination in 2003 for his portrayal of a stage manager in the Broadway run of Thornton Wilder’s
Our Town.
“For over half a century, Paul Newman has graced our stages and inspired our souls with his brilliant talent,” Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, said.
