season 12 premiered Wednesday night to its lowest-rated start since season 1. With 17.81 million viewers, Idol
dropped more than 4 million viewers from last season's premiere.
American Idol Season 12 Premiere Recap>>
The vast majority of the American Idol
season 12 premiere was devoted to introducing the new judges. There was Nicki Minaj's weird British accent and her already unbearable "feud" with Mariah Carey. Then we had Keith Urban, a sweet guy hiding under the desk to avoid the horrors. I hope Idol has a trauma counselor on stand-by, because Urban will definitely have PTSD by the end of the season.
But amid the judge-centric nonsense and laughably bad singers, there were a handful of bright spots. For me, the best part of the American Idol
auditions isn't the crazy judge antics or the trainwreck auditions, it's trying to predict which Hollywood-bound singers will make it to the end.
So after every audition episode, I'll add my two cents about who to watch for during Hollywood Week, the singers I suspect will go far in the competition.
The thing that makes this particularly difficult for the New York auditions was the total lack of WGWGs. If you don't know, that stands for "White Guy With Guitar," a term that applies to the last five winners of American Idol (Phillip Phillips, Scotty McCreery, Lee DeWyze, , Kris Allen and David Cook). Since there wasn't a single WGWG throughout the entire two-hour premiere (not counting unsuccessful one-legged Evan Ruggiero), it seems like the Idol
producers are desperately trying to avoid a six-peat for, as New Girl
's Schmidt and Robby would call it, "white guy power."
Instead, the premiere was all about the ladies. One of the few standouts for me was Jersey's version of Skylar Laine, country and "Super Bass" singer Sarah Restuccio.
But as for the best, that honor belongs to...The One to Watch: Christina "Isabelle"
Armed with a big voice and a big personality, Christina is sure to make it far, at least to the Top 40. She's got the booming voice the judges love and she seemed quite fearless. I predict she'll be singing at least one Adele song before she goes home.
If I had to compare her to a singer from last year, I might go with Erika Van Pelt. Let's just hope the producers don't give her a makeover that leaves her unrecognizable.
What did you think of the American Idol
season 12 premiere? Were you surprised by the lack of WGWGs? Do you agree that Christina "Isabelle" has the best chance for success out of all the successful auditions we saw?
