That wasn't much of a surprise, was it?
So You Think You Should Dance season 9 had to cut four dancers in its first elimination week, and the four who went -- Alexa Anderson, Daniel Baker, Janaya French and Nick Bloxsom-Carter -- were all valid choices. But still we have to ask why?
Not all titles featured on BuddyTV are available through Amazon Prime.
Let's take this dancer by dancer:SAVED: Witney Carson and Chehon Wespi-TschoppWhy it was a surprise:
Last week's samba wasn't so good for Chehon. As for Witney, they've got another blonde ballroom girl. Why it wasn't a surprise:
There was little chance of losing Witney, who has given two excellent performances (samba and Bollywood) in two weeks. Chehon was more of a toss-up, but his Bollywood dance in week 2 probably gave him the edge over Daniel.
Alexa AndersonWhy it was a surprise:
After all that screen time during the Vegas callbacks, it's kind of shocking that So You Think You Can Dance
was ready to let go of its golden girl so quickly. The judges have a reputation for saving dancers like Alexa, even if America begs to differ. Why it wasn't a surprise:
Much of the reason why we saw so much of Alexa during Vegas week was due to criticism. The judges had a lot of comments to make on her passion and her expressiveness. No one can argue that Alexa isn't a good dancer, but she's not as entertaining as many. Her two performances during the competition part of the show weren't too great either.Daniel BakerWhy it was a surprise:
Have you looked at him? The man is gorgeous, foreign and appealing in all of the right ways. Daniel was also featured positively throughout the audition process. Why it wasn't a surprise:
The performances since Vegas week have not been kind to Daniel. He is a technically impressive performer, but neither the choreography nor the interpretation shone. And there are plenty of other heartthrobs in So You Think You Can Dance
season 9.Janaya French
Why it was a surprise:
Janaya's competition dances have been quite strong, especially in this week's Broadway number. She may be the only eliminated dancer who can't be faulted for failure. Why it wasn't a surprise:
No one had any idea of who this girl was. Even her selection on the Green Mile was just a footnote to the drama of Amelia Lowe. We never saw her audition and we never saw Janaya in Las Vegas. 9 seconds of autobiographical silliness was hardly enough to express the girl's personality. Nick Bloxsom-CarterWhy it was a surprise:
While this may have been the least surprising of the eliminations, Nick was
the only male ballroom dancer we really saw in season 9. He had a shot due to originality alone. Why it wasn't a surprise:
Nick was never seen during the original auditions and was only a passing face in Las Vegas. The judges have consistently offered mild criticism for his performances ever since. And Nick just isn't charismatic enough to compete with some of those other guys. What Next?
These eliminations make for one big change -- Amber Jackson and Brandon Mitchell have both lost their partners and will be paired together starting next week.
The competition must continue. And hopefully next week -- in which we can expect only two eliminations instead of four -- will not feel like such a bloodbath. The guest judge making an appearance will be Christina Applegate, while we will also get a performance from the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater.
