In the episode “Are We or Aren't We,” Chrissy decides to make her first trip back to Newport Harbor just in time for the holidays.  This will also be the first time she will see Clay since school.  She invites her sorority sisters Allie and Kylie to a party in Newport to meet all her friends but is contemplating on whether or not she and Clay are still together since she didn't go home to see him and he didn't come to visit her either.

Back in Newport, Grant and Clay are out fishing while Clay talks about the difficulty of his long distance relationship with Chrissy.  Grant suggests to Clay to just give it up, although Clay still cares about her and is disappointed that he's going to be out of town during Chrissy's party and that they'll only have one night together.

Chrissy arrives to Newport and is quickly welcomed by her parents, who are excited to hear about college life.  Her parents tell her that Clay's making her dinner at his beach house and seems to be impressed about his romantic plan.

On the big date, Chrissy and Clay fall into each other's arms.  They make small talk before further discussing their relationship as a couple.  Though a long-distance relationship is difficult to sustain, they agree that what they have is too special to let go.  Clay says he didn't date anybody else since she left, while Chrissy isn't sure what to say since she hasn't met someone special, but met a lot of new people.

In L.A., Allie and Samantha decide to return home for Chrissy's party, though they hope that there won't be any drama.

Clay fills in Grant about his confusing relationship with Chrissy just before heading out of town.  As usual, Grant suggests for Clay to just give up the relationship and enjoy his senior year.

Kylie and Allie arrive in Newport Harbor and reveals to Chrissy that there's going to be a surprise at the party for her: Chrissy's crush, Billy is coming all the way from Santa Barbara.  More drama unfolds at the party as Chase shows up with his new girl, Chrissy's sorority sister Kylie, and proceeds to flirt with her in front of Taylor.  Upon Billy's arrival, Chrissy and Billy get cozy and even kiss, which was seen by almost everyone.

The next day, Chrissy tells her dad about kissing Billy just before heading back to Santa Barbara. Her dad tells her that she needs to be honest and break up with Clay.  Elsewhere, Grant tells Clay what happened at the party and that they'll be heading up to Santa Barbara next weekend so Clay can see for himself what's going on.
