Fans of New Amsterdam have something to look forward to in the coming months.  Sadly, it has nothing to do with the return of the short-lived drama that aired on FOX or its lead cast members.  However, it does give a chance for some of the brains behind New Amsterdam to continue showcasing their expertise in the world of police drama.

Sugar Hill, the latest brainchild of New Amsterdam producers Steven Pearl and Allan Loeb, revolves around two police detectives, one black and one white, who join forces on the chaotic and volatile streets of late-1960s Harlem.  Loeb and Pearl, who have a first-look deal at FtvS, are executive producing the project with Alex Winter (Saul of the Mole Men, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, We're Here to Help) serving as writer and co-executive producer.  The pilot will be broadcast on AMC.

"As with all our other projects, this seemed to lend itself to unique and interesting characters and the promise of a really cinematic series that could stand side by side with our library of films," AMC vice president of original programming Jeremy Elice said, adding that the project is proposed to be serialized with the potential for closed-ended stories as well.

But Sugar Hill isn't your typical crime series.  According to FtvS executive vice president of programming David Madden, the project will also deal with the period's culture though dismissing comparison to ABC's Life on Mars, a police drama set in the 1970s.

"With this being set in Harlem and the late '60s, we felt like this was a way to also deal with the crux of how the culture was changing at the time," Madden explained. "Sugar Hill is after much more of the massive sociological and psychological changes the country and world was going through at that time."
