In the tradition of detectives, crime-fighters, would-be heroes and other handsome do-gooders with a unique secret, now comes FOX's New Amsterdam.  New Amsterdam is the story of a brilliant albeit mysterious New York homicide detective with a very unique and profound secret – he happens to be immortal.

The saga begins in the year 1642.  John Amsterdam, played by Nikolaj Coster Waldau, is a Dutch soldier in what was then known as New Amsterdam.  He intercepts the onslaught of a sword in order to save the life of a Native American girl during the massacre of her indigenous tribe.  In exchange for his sacrifice, the lass calls on an ancient spell that bestows upon John the gift (or curse) of immortality.  The girl informs him that he will remain ageless until he comes upon his one true love, at which point he will once again be ripe to lead a mortal existence.

In a span of three centuries, Amsterdam comes to learn the hard way, that his immortality is a both a privilege and a bane.  While he has the limitless chance to embrace countless varied adventures, witness an unending assortment of events and hone and perfect his vast array of talents, the flipside sees him watching everyone in his life age, fall ill and eventually succumb to inevitable death.

In his lonely and isolated existence, Amsterdam has but one ally with whom he has been able to share his unbelievable secret.  His current lifelong friend is Omar, played by Stephen Henderson.  Omar is a jazz club owner, whose wisdom John has come to rely on.  The sole living witness to its entire history as a colonial outpost, John Amsterdam now continues his seemingly unending journey in what has become the mega-metropolis of New York City, then New Amsterdam.

Now among the NYPD's elite in homicide investigation, John is paired off with the vibrant yet strong-willed Eva Marquez, played by Zuleikha Robinson.  On the job one day, Amsterdam suffers from what appears to be a massive heart attack while in pursuit of a suspect.  When Dr. Sara Dillane, portrayed by Alexie Gilmore, pronounces him dead in the emergency room, Amsterdam wonders whether his endless journey may be nearing its end.

A new saga of immortal valor begins tonight when New Amsterdam unfolds on FOX at 9.
