Nashville is only halfway through season 5, but CMT is ready to commit to another year because the country music drama has been renewed for a 6th season.

The new season will premiere sometime in early 2018 and will consist of only 16 episodes. This is down from the 22 episodes that season 5 will end up having.

Speaking of which, CMT has also announced when Nashville will return for the back half of the current season. The mid-season premiere will air on Thursday, June 1 at 9/8c.

In a press release about this news, CMT notes that the mid-season premiere will take place 10 weeks after the mid-season finale, in which "Deacon helps Daphne with a school project, but Daphne feels unmotivated. Juliette gives Maddie unsolicited advice about a song. Scarlett and Gunnar receive news about the baby."

The OC's Rachel Bilson and Empire's Kaitlin Doubleday have joined Nashville for the rest of season 5. And Big Little Lies' Jeff Nordling is coming on board in a recurring role.

Season 5 is the first season that Nashville has aired on CMT, following ABC's decision to cancel the series after four seasons. The premiere episode drew in 1.25 million viewers, though subsequent episodes brought in less than a million viewers. The only non-premiere episode to reach at least 1 million was the episode following lead character Rayna Jaymes' death.

The series stars Hayden Panettiere, Clare Bowen, Chris Carmack, Charles Esten, Jonathan Jackson, Sam Palladio, Maisy Stella and Lennon Stella.
