For
Sophia Myles, the opportunity to be a part of
Moonlight came at just the right moment. For years, she had been struggling with work in the U.K. acting scene, which she describes as “non-existent” now, and after sitting around for six months following her work on Howard McCain's upcoming science fiction film,
Outlander, a big break finally came through for the 27-year-old English actress. Although she was scared and quite hesitant at first to be away from her friends, family and life in England, she grabbed the chance to turn her dreams into reality by making the transition to American TV and moving to Los Angeles. Now, she is popularly known as Beth Turner on the supernatural series and has become one of Hollywood's emerging celebrities with a solid following.
Prior to being cast on
Moonlight, Myles worked on films like
Underworld, Out of Bounds, Dracula and
Tristan & Isolde. She also appeared on television shows like
Coming Up, Extras and
Doctor Who where she played Reinette.
Despite the change of scenery and the adjustments she had to put up with in moving to Los Angeles, Myles adapted quite easily especially on the show Moonlight, which also stars another foreign actor in the form of
Alex O'Loughlin (Mick St. John).
“It's really good. I was really delighted to find out that I had an Australian co-star because I think I would have really felt like the black sheep, if it was just me and everyone else was American. Even though he's not from England, to have another foreigner is nice. We get along really well,” Myles said of O'Loughlin.
As Beth on
Moonlight, Myles portrays an internet investigative reporter who has a distinctive bond with Mick, a private investigator and vampire who saved her when she was a very young child. As their paths cross again, Mick struggles with his immortality and his unleashed feelings for Beth.
“It makes for a very interesting, romantic story to tell because vampires don't age and Beth, obviously, will. It could get really interesting….They're not going to become boyfriend and girlfriend, straight away, but you're going to want to watch them fall in love with each other. It's going to get messy. It's really complicated. He's not going to age and she is, so that's weird,” Myles told
MediaBlvd Magazine.
As for her newfound fame, Myles is grateful for fans that have grown to love the show.
“Science fiction fans are the nicest fans in the world. I've done a couple science fiction films, so I know. They're really cool. They're really respectful and into it,” she said.
